By BBN Staff: Despite the lack of definitive scientific evidence, Stephane Bancel, the Chief Executive Officer of Moderna, the US-based biotech company responsible for one of the COVID-19 vaccines currently on the market, says that the Moderna vaccine will provide years of protection from the virus, reports Reuters.
Reuters notes that Bancel commented on the vaccine’s ability event organized by financial services group Oddo BHF today; however, vaccine development and pharmacovigilance(drug safety) usually takes years of research and testing to determine.
“The nightmare scenario that was described in the media in the spring with a vaccine only working a month or two is, I think, out of the window,” Bancel said. “The antibody decay generated by the vaccine in humans goes down very slowly…We believe there will be protection potentially for a couple of years.”
Bancel also said that Moderna is confident its vaccine will work on the new COVID-19 variants, recently discovered in the United Kingdom and South Africa. Moderna, which managed to develop a vaccine in only a matter of weeks last year, got its approval for use from the European Commission on Wednesday.
