Immigration officers walk free from drug trafficking charge

Posted: Thursday, January 7, 2021. 9:57 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Three Cayo-based Immigration officers walked free from a drug trafficking charge in the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court this week.

The officers had been stopped by police in August 2020, driving a government pickup truck which was later discovered to have 21 parcels of marijuana weighing over eight pounds.

Their defense attorney filed a no-case submission to the court on the grounds that the drugs were discovered inside a filing cabinet located in the pan of the pickup, which was used by various other people, as such, it could not be proven that the drugs belonged to any of the men or that they had prior knowledge of the drugs being there.

The Magistrate accepted the submission and the case was subsequently thrown out.
