Benque constable charged with sexual assault of teen

By Aaron Humes: It has been a week of black eyes for the Belize Police Department, caused by several of their own.

Police officer Edgar Teul is accused of taking advantage of a 19-year-old female visiting the police station in San Jose Succotz last week.

On January 18, according to police, the woman said she had gone to sign for bail for her common-law partner, who had been detained for wounding.

Assistant Commissioner of Police and head of National Crimes Investigation Branch, Joseph Myvette, said that while waiting, the officer allegedly sexually assaulted the woman three times.

Teul lives above the station building and was investigated when a cache of guns went missing therefrom.

ACP Myvette says Teul has been interdicted from duty pending the outcome of this second investigation.
