Municipal and By-Election 2021: The West: The Twin Towns and Benque 

By Aaron Humes:  Could the ‘Red Hills’ of Cayo go blue? After the sweep of the district achieved by the People’s United Party in November, few would bet against it. Standing in the way is the steadfast Mayor of San Ignacio/Santa Elena, Earl Trapp, Junior, who is playing defense as the underdog. 

San Ignacio/Santa Elena Towns 

United Democratic Party: Earl Trapp, Jr., Mayor; Abdel Cowo, Bernadette Fernandez, Amed Figueroa, Iliana Moreno, Mark O’Brien, and Lin Valentine, councilors. 

People’s United Party: Ramon Quiroz, Mayor; Zahir Figueroa, Aaron Mai, Shirlene Neal, Alberto Palma, Matthew Preston Silva, and Omar Rodriguez, councilors. 

Independent: Roody Wade, Mayor; John Escobar, Eldon Evans, Raymond Evans, Linda Gonzalez, J. Vanegas and Timoteo Vanegas, councillors.      

Polling and counting stations: Polling Area 72, Sacred Heart College, San Ignacio Town; Polling Area 73, Sacred Heart R.C. School, San Ignacio Town; Polling Area 76, Santa Elena Roman Catholic Primary School, Santa Elena Town. (Note: Each polling station also serves as a counting station).

Benque Viejo del Carmen 

United Democratic Party: Miguel Guerra, Mayor; Manuel Contreras, Alvaro Gongora, Miguel Gonzalez, Jose Antonio Guerra, Abilio Leon and Charles Ponce, councillors.                                    

People’s United Party: Jorge Antonio Rosales, Mayor; Teresita Alvarado, Edgar Luis Cocom, Vania Melissa Garcia, Oscar Gongora, Carlos Iglesias and Avelin Martinez Barillas, councilors.  

Polling and counting stations: Polling Area 83, Mount Carmel Primary School, Benque Viejo del Carmen Town; Polling Area 84, Mount Carmel Middle School, Benque Viejo del Carmen Town. Counting Station:  Mount Carmel Primary School, Benque Viejo del Carmen Town.
