By Aaron Humes: Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, says the Police Department continues to monitor, and if possible, deter, landings of suspected drug planes in Belizean territory.
He says he is not aware of a plane landing near Dangriga Town last week as reported.
According to Musa, police action more often than not deters such landings: “On a weekly basis, and sometimes two, three times a week, we are notified of possible landings in the country, and we take action immediately. I know it is always a grand story when a plane lands in the country and we find it; but I can tell you the number of times we deter planes, aircraft from our area is significantly more. On a weekly basis we deter them to other countries – Mexico, Guatemala.”
The last confirmed landing was in the Hillbank area of Orange Walk at the end of January. Up to nine persons were arrested and charged, including several law enforcement officers, who were found with two bales of cocaine suspected to have been taken from the crashed plane in the Crooked Tree lagoon.
