Irene Thiessen wins National Heroes 10K virtual race by two minutes

By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Irene Thiessen won the National Heroes Virtual 10K Run done over the long weekend.

Thiessen running for Team Westrac in Spanish Lookout clocked 53:07, 02:13 faster than second place Mirtha Welch of the Roaring Creek Vet Clinic who was timed at 55:20.

Third place was taken by Roxana Lemus of Team Westrac doing a time of 56:54 in San Ignacio.

Stacey Pelayo of the Shuga City Run Club in Orange Walk Town ran the 10 kilometers in 57:31 finishing fourth.

Fifth belonged to Miriam Arevalo of Westrac running in Unitedville. She completed the event in 58:06.

In San Ignacio, Consuelo Espat of the Splash Running Club was sixth to a time of 59:10.

Seventh place was Evita Peralta out of San Felipe, Orange Walk, running for Los Guerreros in 59:39.

Next, Lucelly Ramos of Belize City and running for Powered By Plants recorded the 8th position in 59.44.

Go Team’s Cheryl Olson in Consejo Shores, Corozal, took 9th place in one hour, 8 seconds while Lilly Waight of the Orange Walk Running Sisters rounded off the top ten in 1:00:30.

Xenia Rauda (11), Loany Ruiz (12), Fátima Varela (13), Clara Lopez (14) and Ester Samayoa (15) were next.

The race was hosted by Erlando Che’s FitLife 501 and the Orange Walk District Sports Council, with assistance from Total Time’s Ricardo Salazar who runs the Totaltime.bz website which records all times.

Runners countrywide had any of three days to run their 10 kilometers as the virtual event started on Saturday, March 6, 2021 and finished on Monday, March 8, 2021. Participants, however, had until Tuesday, March 9, at 5:00 p.m. to submit their results.

Even though more than 90 runners registered only 84 total, including 39 men, actually competed.

Since the race is done virtually, it means that runners do not start at the same time, but all of them clock themselves on their mobile apps that record the details of their run. They, then, upload their results to the organizer at TotalTime – Chip Timing Service (totaltimebz.com).

Meanwhile, the Placencia Splash Running Club month-long run is on as well. The participating athletes run as much as they can throughout the month recording how many kilometers they’ve run, on their phone apps and then upload their statistics at the end of the month. The runner with the most kilometers covered during the month is the winner. Luis August and Wanda Stakutis won the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, in February.

Two more events are schedule for this month: the Power Run: Celebrating Women Virtual 5K Run/Walk hosted by SHINE and Baby Earth from March 24-28 and the Chiquibul Challenge Marathon hosted by the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic from March 20 to 31.
