Jonathan Hooper wins National Heroes 10K virtual race

Posted: Wednesday, March 10, 2021. 12:52 pm CST.

By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Jonathan Hooper of Team Jarg Enterprises won the National Heroes Virtual 10K Run done over the long weekend.

Hooper, who is Head of Coaching Education at the Football Federation of Belize, clocked 43 minutes and ten seconds in Belmopan to top the field of 39 men participants, 38 of whom completed the virtual race.

Rafael August Jr. of Team Splash, running in San Ignacio, finished second just 11 seconds behind Hooper, with a time of 43:21.

Brandon Santos of the San Pedro Triathlon team took third place one second behind August at 43:22.

From Placencia, Maurice Leslie registered as Self/Splash Running Club was 4th with a time of 43:24.

Wilbert Young of Team Splash has a time of 43:30 in 5th in Corozal.

Belize Track Club had 6th and 7th in Kamrone Sainsburry – 44:23 (Independence) and Christopher Broaster – 45.55 (Belmopan), respectively.

FitLife501 Erlando Che, one of the organizers, running in Orange Walk, was 8th with a time 47:47.

Westrac’s Hector Moreira ran the 10 kilometers in 48:54 in Belmopan finishing ninth while in Belize City Tyrone Harris (49:41), running independently did the run in 49:41 to take the 10th spot.

Joel Parada, Stuart Tucker, Kenroy Westby, Arlin Bautista and Maynor Peña followed from 11th to 15th respectively.

The race was hosted by Erlando Che’s FitLife 501 and the Orange Walk District Sports Council, with assistance from Total Time’s Ricardo Salazar who runs the Totaltime.bz website which records all times.

Runners countrywide had any of three days to run their 10 kilometers as the virtual event started on Saturday, March 6, 2021 and finished on Monday, March 8, 2021. Participants, however, had until Tuesday, March 9, at 5:00 p.m. to submit their results.

Even though more than 90 runners registered only 84 total, including 45 women, actually competed.

Since the race is done virtually, it means that runners do not start at the same time, but all of them clock themselves on their mobile apps that record the details of their run. They, then, upload their results to the organizer at TotalTime – Chip Timing Service (totaltimebz.com).

Meanwhile, the Placencia Splash Running Club month-long run is on as well. The participating athletes run as much as they can throughout the month recording how many kilometers they’ve run, on their phone apps and then upload their statistics at the end of the month. The runner with the most kilometers covered during the month is the winner. Luis August and Wanda Stakutis won the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, in February.

Two more events are schedule for this month: the Power Run: Celebrating Women Virtual 5K Run/Walk hosted by SHINE and Baby Earth from March 24-28 and the Chiquibul Challenge Marathon hosted by the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic from March 20 to 31.
