Real Madrid qualifies comfortably to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Real Madrid made easy pickings of Italian club Atalanta in the last 16 return match played at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium in Madrid.

Having lost 1-0 at home, Atalanta started off on high gear but their pace slowed down after the first half-hour allowing Madrid more space to operate.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring in the 34th minute off a pass by Luca Modric who had intercepted goalkeeper Marco Sportiello’s clearance.

Sergio Ramos scored Madrid’s second goal in the 60th minute from the penalty spot after Atalanta captain Rafael Toloi cut down Vinicius as he entered the penalty area.

Luis Muriel cut one back for Atalanta in the 83rd off a superb free-kick.

A minute later Marco Asensio, just off the bench, put Real Madrid up by two again for the final 3-1 off a pass by Lucas Vasquez who had made a powerful run on the right flank.

With that, Real Madrid, having won 1-0 in Italy, qualified on a 4-1 aggregate.
