GOB considers postponing National Budget in wake of stalemate with unions

Posted: Thursday, March 18, 2021. 10:58 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Breaking Belize News has confirmed that the Government of Belize, in the wake of ongoing negotiations with the unions over a proposed salary cut, is considering a delay of reading the national budget, which was scheduled for March 26.

The Government has indicated its interest in attempting to finalize cost-cutting measures being negotiated with teachers and public officers.

The new John Briceno administration recently received a counter proposal from the joint-union negotiating team, on a number of considerations that the government can and should make before considering a 10 percent salary cut to teachers and public officers.

The unions and the government’s negotiating tea have another round of discussions coming up later this month.
