Three murdered, three more injured in deadly day of shootings on Southside, Belize City

Posted: Thursday, March 18, 2021. 1:11 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A total of six persons including one woman and one minor were injured in three separate shooting incidents in the span of roughly five hours yesterday, Wednesday. Three have since died.

In the first shooting of the day, Percival Pilgrim, 24, who was shot as many as ten times on Banak Street around 2:30 in the afternoon, reportedly passed early this morning, Thursday, after being treated at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Minor Kanye King escaped with a graze.

The second incident took place around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday night. 30-year-old Delon Hinds and 54-year-old Toy Madrid, both of Iguana Street Extension, were standing on the street side in front of a house when they were shot at from inside a black Mazda Tribute SUV.

As both were rushed to hospital, police chased down the vehicle and found two nine-millimetre firearms inside.

Detained were 19-year-old Travis Herbert, of Pitter Street; 27-year-old Shikell Nunez of Mopan Street; and 20-year-old Shawn Ortiz of Fern Lane. Police continue to investigate this incident.

Not even 20 minutes later, at 7:42 p.m. Police were called back to hospital to observe the bodies of 21-year-old Allen Garcia of Vernon Street and 49-year-old Cynthia Conorquie of Logwood Street, both of whom were attacked by a single armed man who shot them both with deadly intent before escaping on foot. This matter is also under investigation.

All told, Wednesday night and Thursday morning saw four murders, three in Belize City and Dennis Trapp in Punta Gorda, and when the death of Tyrique Gillett on Tuesday is added, that makes five murders in the span of 48 hours.

Police as yet have given no indication of what is behind this flare-up of violence, though the shootings occurred in a barely half-mile radius stretching west to Elston Kerr Street, east to Logwood Street, north to Banak Street and south to Iguana Street. The Banak area in particular is a known center of gang activity.
