Belize mourns immeasurable loss as world renowned conservationist and Belize Zoo Founder, Sharon Matola, passes away

By BBN Staff: Sharon Matola, the visionary that founded the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center, has died. She was 66 years old.

The Belize Zoo announced on its official Facebook page this afternoon that Matola died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Belmopan earlier today.

Matola will be remembered for her tireless commitment to Belize over the past 38 years since the Zoo was first founded. She was a dear friend of Breaking Belize News and BBN’s Woman of the Year 2020.

BBN expresses its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the late Sharon Matola. May she rest in peace.
