By BBN Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño extended his condolences on behalf of himself and the Government of Belize to the family and friends of the late Sharon Matola, the founder of the Belize Zoo, who died earlier today.

“Ms. Matola dedicated her life to conserving, protecting, and advocating for Belize’s wildlife and was the founding director of The Belize Zoo. Through her work, she educated Belizeans and visitors from around the globe about the importance of the conservation and the protection of our wildlife,” Briceño said.

He concluded by thanking Matola for her contribution to Belize.

News of Matola’s passing rocked the nation this afternoon. The Belize Zoo noted that she died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Belmopan, and asked the public to be patient and respect her family’s privacy as they await notification on a date for her memorial service.
