Ministry of Agriculture getting a variety of seeds from Guatemala for research purposes

Posted: Sunday, April 18, 2021. 9:18 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Agriculture, Jose Abelardo Mai, and Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry, Servulo Baeza, visited BEJO seed farm in San Lucas, Sacatepéquez near Antigua in Guatemala on Saturday.

In an exclusive interview with BBN, Minister Mai said he accepted the offer to visit as he was seeking “to strengthen the relationship between BEJO seed company and the Ministry’s research and development arm in Central Farm”.

“We learnt a great deal today at BEJO Guatemala. We will improve our agriculture with improved genetics and technology,” Minister Mai said after the visit.

“We have secured two green houses from Agro Vet Jiron and we will receive seeds (from BEJO) for our research programs in Central Farm. Thanks to Agro Vet Jiron and BEJO Guatemala,” Mai said. Agro Vet Jiron is a major local distributor of seeds produced and marketed by BEJO.

In a social media post, the Minister of Agriculture noted “We will receive various varieties of onions seeds that may be planted throughout the year. The objective is to be self-sufficient in onions throughout the year. This can only be achieved by planting the appropriate varieties and proper storage.” According to Mai, once we are able to produce onions year round, there will be no need to import.

BEJO Guatemala is part of a worldwide company that specializes in the breeding, production, and sale of seeds. In the Americas, BEJO has franchises in Guatemala, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and the United States.

BEJO Guatemala produces seeds for 30 different agricultural products including onions, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, and celery.

Minister Mai said he was invited to visit BEJO Guatemala by Agro Vet Jiron and Sons Limited of Santa Elena, Cayo.
“We learned more than what we expected,” Mai said. “We thank @BEJO and Agro Vet Jiron for supporting our Ministry in immediate future.”
