Chief Magistrate addresses rumors that courts are closed, says its business as usual

By Benjamin Flowers: Today a notice began circulating alleging a sick-out at the Belize City Magistrates Court; however, Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser has since addressed the issue saying that it is untrue.

The unofficial notice which has no identified source alleged that the staff of the magistrate’s court was staging the sick out as a means of expressing no confidence in Fraser’s leadership and called on the Government of Belize (GOB) to “remedy the situation.”

In an official release from the Magistrate’s Office Fraser said “The Belize City Magistrates Court is OPEN AND RUNNING in its service to the people. The Courts are functional to conduct the business of the people.”

Notably, Fraser has been singled out in recent weeks by political social media pages targeting her character and questioning her motives for participating in the organized industrial action by the joint union negotiating team against GOB. However, with no definite source of the release, it remains unclear if this was another such attack.
