Bill to cut public officers’ pay debated in Senate

Posted: Friday, June 4, 2021. 12:45 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: As expected, the formal means of implementing the Government’s decision to cut the salaries of teachers and public officers is attracting objections.

Lead Opposition Senator Michael Peyrefitte reiterated the Opposition’s objections to reducing the pay of those who contribute most to the Public Service.

And Trade Union Senator Elena Smith reiterated that even as Government cries broke, hirings continue, services are not being curtailed and further cuts for the recent industrial action are in effect.

For teachers, the school managing authorities must pick up the slack, Smith said, as teachers can hardly expect to provide intangible services as they did before.

As to the matter of compensation, there is still skepticism as to how the proposed performance bonus mechanism will work, Smith said.

The debate continues at this hour.
