Revised Emancipation Day joins holiday list, Columbus day off

By Aaron Humes: The Minister responsible for Holidays, Kareem Musa has announced that the August 1 holiday that is now a part of the holiday calendar will be known as Emancipation Day and not Freedom Day.

It marks as in other Caribbean countries the release of slaves from servitude in 1834.

Columbus Day or Day of the Americas, observed on October 12, is missing from the list, suggesting that it will not be observed this year.

Upcoming holidays apart from Emancipation Day are St. George’s Caye Day on Friday, September 10; Independence Day on Tuesday, September 21; Garifuna Settlement Day on Friday, November 19; and the Christmas weekend starting on Saturday December 25 and extending to Monday, December 27.

The changes to the holiday list, including George Price Day on January 15, have been Gazetted.
