Joint-Unions applaud Government for bringing good governance legislation to the House of Representatives; requests consultations

By Benjamin Flowers: Today, the Joint Union Team (JUT) commended the Government of Belize (GOB) for tabling good governance reform legislation in the House of Representatives but says that the Bill in its current form is lacking.

The JUT, which is comprised of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB), Public service Union (PSU), Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU), and the Association of Public Sector Senior Managers (APSSM), said that it attended the meeting of the Public Service, Labour, Industry, and Trade Committee of the House of Representatives on the Protected Disclosures Bill, 2021 and applauds GOB for introducing the bill.

The unions recommended; however, that GOB hold consultations with key stakeholders and the general public to increase the Bill’s efficacy.

“We believe this will allow us the opportunity to have legislation that is practical and fit for purpose. We do not feel the Bill in its current formulation meets these standards,” the JUT said.

The unions noted that they have been calling for legislation that will address corruption and other forms of wrongdoing within government structures, and said they trust that the House Committee members will adopt their recommendations to ensure that the Bill will contribute to making positive change in Belize’s democracy.
