By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department, which is still coping with the recent burial of Superintendent Henry Jemmott, has lost another officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fernando Neal, due to a road traffic accident.

Neal, along with Police Constable (PC) Didier Clavel were driving to Belize City from Corozal on Saturday night when they were involved in a road traffic accident with a pickup truck at mile 77. ASP Fitzroy Yearwood told the media today that the pickup was occupied by two men, who fled the scene after the collision, which left ASP Neal trapped inside the damaged vehicle.

Neal was later extracted from the vehicle and taken to the Corozal Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Meanwhile, PC Clavel is receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the accident and is listed as being in stable condition.

“Anybody in their normal sense would that if you’re involved in an accident if you can render assistance you might be able to save that person’s life,” Yearwood said. “So the moment you fled the scene of an accident, you lessen the chance of that person getting immediate attention that could be life-saving.”

Police have detained one person of interest for questioning and are seeking one more in an ongoing investigation.
