Two doses of Pfizer or AstraZeneca good against Delta, says study

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Two doses of Pfizer or AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine are practically as effective against the Delta variant as they are against the Alpha variant, according to a study published on Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine.

However, officials said that one jab of either vaccine is not enough to combat the worldwide dominant Delta variant, according to a Reuters report.

Already, Public Health England (PHE) had made such a statement in May.

The study showed that the Pfizer vaccine is 88% effective in preventing symptomatic coronavirus infections by the Delta variant. Pfizer was 93.7% effective against the Alpha variant.

The AstraZeneca vaccine proved to be 67% effective against the Delta variant while the AstraZeneca had 74.5% effectiveness against Alpha.

While PHE said the first dose of either of the two vaccines had approximately 33% effectiveness in preventing symptomatic disease from the Delta variant, the new study backed it up by saying one dose of the Pfizer vaccine has 36% effectiveness, while one dose of AstraZeneca’s vaccine is approximately 30% effective.
