El Salvador receives 1 million vaccines from China

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Monday, El Salvador was to receive 1 million Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines from China after signing a cooperation agreement according to Reuters.

Minister of Health Francisco Alabi said that with the Chinese vaccines, El Salvador will have more than 9.5 million doses meaning the government will be able to fully vaccinate 4.5 million, which is the target.

Despite the United States’ donation of 3 million Moderna vaccines to El Salvador through COVAX, Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele said that China is investing in El Salvador without conditions. Bukele was clearly hitting at the United States, particularly after the US publicized a list of 17 corrupt Central American officials. The list included a number of Bukele’s associates.

El Salvador recently ratified a cooperation agreement it has with China which is making investments of up to $500 million in El Salvador.

Prior to the Sinopharm vaccines, El Salvador had acquired 8.5 million vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Sinovac.
