Albert Area Rep Tracy Panton: ‘Government not so SMART dropping Telemedia’

By Aaron Humes: Albert area representative Tracy Taegar-Panton, responsible for economic development and investment, inveighed against the cozy relationship allegedly established between the Government and Smart in the case of the Labour Department.

The UDP worked hard to get at least 91 percent of shares in Belize Telemedia Limited, through Social Security in particular, she noted.

Unfairly favoring Smart, owned by members of the Briceno family and so-called Ashcroft Alliance, is an attack on Belizean investment and on the contributions of Belizean people to a Belizean owned company, Taegar-Panton said.

BTL Chairman Mark Lizarraga, who regularly spoke up against corruption while in office, needs to be heard from on this “theft” of Telemedia’s potential resources. He has said in other media that he has had difficulty reaching Government officials to negotiate on continuing relationships between Belmopan and Saint Thomas Street, she alluded.

Panton also mentioned the profits earned by Belize Electricity Limited in the pandemic year and said Belizeans must stay vigilant.
