Opposition Leader says he will work with Government figures after U.S. tour

By Aaron Humes: His post is the third-most powerful in the National Assembly behind only the Speaker and the Prime Minister, and Moses “Shyne” Barrow has made the rare effort to reach across the political aisle and update Governmental colleagues on his travels in the United States.

In addition to Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler, Barrow said he tried calling Prime Minister John Briceño for an update but missed him. He reiterated that bipartisanship must be the order of the day for all Belize to succeed and to welcome the potential opportunities from his tour in terms of investment and sister city relations.

Barrow also noted that he will be speaking with Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, and has already spoken to deputy Allan Pollard; San Ignacio Mayor Earl Trapp and Dangriga Mayor Robert Mariano about establishing sister-city relations with various American cities.

As a product of the diaspora himself, Barrow said he made sure to engage groups of Belizeans across the U.S. from Los Angeles to New York City, and made it known that he supports the right of the Diaspora to vote and participate in Belizean elections dating back to the private members’ bill from Kareem Musa on that subject on the ICJ referendum in 2019.

The trip was something he had been planning before last year’s election and he was determined not to go ‘empty-handed’ or ‘just to see my mom and take pictures of the Empire State Building,’ Shyne said.
