GOB misses deadline to appeal Jalacte ruling, files for extension

Posted: Tuesday, September 14, 2021. 9:55 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Despite its sympathy for the Maya people, the Government has vowed to appeal June’s judgment by Acting Chief Justice Michelle Arana for 6.3 million dollars against the Government of Belize in favor of the Maya village of Jalacte. The case had to do with the acquisition of customary Maya lands without their consent.

However, GOB failed to file within the required 21-day window to the Court of Appeal. According to KREM News, the Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs has confirmed that an application has been filed to seek an extension of that time. There was no answer as to whether the recent amendment to the Court of Appeal Act to enlarge the time limit for appeal will be invoked here.

KREM adds the Government has hired two private law firms to pursue the extension.
