Attorney General promises change at Vital Statistics Unit

Posted: Friday, September 24, 2021. 11:21 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: According to the Government Press Office, Attorney General Magali Marin this morning visited the Vital Statistics office on Queen Street where she spent time talking to those awaiting service.

The Vital Statistics Unit is responsible for the registration of all births, marriages, and deaths in Belize and keeping and producing records of the same.

The good news, according to Government is that within weeks the office will be relocated to a more efficient and customer-friendly setting, and with that will come a complete upgrade of services, including the digitization of applications for critical documents.

The Belize City VSU office has previously been located on Gabourel Lane, and in the former Santiago Castillo Limited building on New Road and Hyde’s Lane, before being moved to the former Lotto office on Queen Street.

On social media, Belizeans have complained of the long lines they must endure, especially those from “out District,” as well as allegations of corrupt practices.

We’ll keep monitoring the story.
