By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “The Department of Co-operatives, responsible for the registration and regulation of co-operatives, today held a registration ceremony for the Valley of Peace Lagoon Farmers Co-operative Society Limited,” said the Government of Belize Press Office.
The Valley of Peace Lagoon Farmers Co-operative which is comprised of 32 members ─ 22 men and 10 women, operates out of the Lagoon Area of Valley of Peace in the Cayo District. The cooperative produces vegetables and fruits such as cabbage, lettuce, potato, onion, bell peppers, tomato, and watermelon.
The Valley of Peace cooperative has transitioned from a self-regulated farmers’ association to a formal enterprise under the guidance of the Department of Co-operatives. Now the farmers have access to auditing and conflict resolution services and entrepreneurial development programs.
Present at the registration ceremony on Friday, October 8, were Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise; Gareth Murillo, Registrar of Co-operatives; Andrew Harrison, Chief Agriculture Officer; Ever Blandon, Chairman of the Co-operative; representatives of the Resilient Rural Belize project; farmers of the co-operative; and staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise.
