Prime Minister says Belize has edged around supply chain crisis, but not price increases

Posted: Monday, November 29, 2021. 7:40 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has told reporters that Belize so far has not been greatly affected by the supply chain crisis around the world.

Ports have increasingly run into bottlenecks in clearing and distributing goods, affecting businesses’ bottom line.

While there is a shortage of some goods the P.M. judged the situation not to be too bad.

However, there is a concern of rising prices for imports – both of actual cost and shipping, which he said has risen “exponentially” and “unexplainably.”

Belize regularly imports 1 to 2 billion Belize dollars in goods annually while exporting far less. There has been an effort to limit imports of goods produced locally, for example, vegetables, dairy, and other foods.
