By BBN Staff: Several people were chopped with machetes during a Belize city brawl on Sunday, and police are exploring the possibility that the Mara Salvatrucha gang, commonly known as MS-13, may be involved.

Director of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood said today that information on the incident is still forthcoming but that the incident took place within the Krooman Lagoon community, which he says is known to have a high concentration of Central American immigrants, opening the possibility for the MS-13 and 18th Steet gangs to feud.

Yearwood said that several people who were taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment following the brawl are now in police custody and that investigators strongly believe the house in the community that was burned down is connected to the incident.

“This is why we have them detained not only for the brawl. Like I said, the house, obviously it was a case of arson,” Yearwood said.

Yearwood said that, of the people detained, he personally charged one of them some years ago for being a member of the MS-13 gang, but it is not known to him whether or not the detainee is still an active member.

“That may have been a factor. It will be an angle that police are looking at because we would not want something like that to rear its head after we have worked so hard to rid our country of these ruthless Central American gangs.”
