Maskall man allegedly assaults woman who refused him a drink of ‘bad man’

By BBN Staff: A Maskall villager is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after allegedly assaulting a woman over a drink of rum known locally simply as “bad man”.

Malique Stuart, 25, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on a charge of common assault against a woman.

The allegation against him is that on Thursday, December 9, Stuart had asked the woman for a drink of “bad man” and when she refused he began to curse at her and beat her with a stick.

In court, Stuart pleaded not guilty but the prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that he has several convictions for crimes of violence against women. Prosecutor, Sergeant Theodore Lopez explained that Stuart has been charged for harm, threatening words, common assault, and in one such case was placed under a peace bond. Lopes also noted that Stuart’s most recent case of harm, which was allegedly committed in March 2020, is still before the courts but Stuart has not been meeting his court dates.

The Magistrate agreed with the prosecution’s objection and remanded Stuart to prison until February 11, 2022.
