Commissioner of Police says current COVID figures within department match height of pandemic

Posted: Wednesday, January 12, 2022. 3:32 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The latest wave of COVID-19 in Belize has taken a toll on every sector and the security forces are no exception.

According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, “a little below” 100 police officers are confirmed to have COVID-19 and another 30 are in quarantine, awaiting results. The total is similar to the height of the pandemic in 2020.

“It certainly is affecting our ability to police the country the way we would like to; nonetheless, we are still doing our utmost best to spread whatever resources we have across the country with a view to ensure that we provide citizens with the level of security they so rightly deserve,” the Commissioner told reporters.

While there is still no official word on whether those affected have the Omicron, Delta, or other strains of COVID-19, the Ministry of Health has allowed shorter isolation periods for those affected on the belief that Omicron is a relatively “milder” variant of the coronavirus SARS-NCov-2.
