By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating the murder of 37-year-old Leslie Gillett, also known as “Dimes,” at Matilda’s Shop in Burrell Boom, Belize District, around 5:25 Friday evening.
According to police, Gillet, a resident of Fresh Pond, was working at the shop when a group of men arrived in a vehicle and walked inside to make purchases.
Gillett had his back turned on his way to the counter when one of the men allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire. After Gillett was shot several times, the men escaped in a blue-colored vehicle, heading down the Burrell Boom Road toward Bermudian Landing.
Police say Gillett was armed at the time with a 9-millimeter firearm loaded with a magazine but it is not said whether he was able to return fire.
The shop was previously the scene of a double murder in November of 2021, where cashier Kendra Miguel and store worker Dennis Brown were the victims.
