By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department is cracking down on gang violence through a number of means including increased stop and search activities which lead to three men being arrested for illegal firearms.

On Friday, 21-year-old Dejuan Nunez was detained in connection with an attempted murder investigation, when officers searched him at the station and found a loaded .9mm pistol on him.

On Saturday officers on mobile patrol stopped and searched 26-year-old Isaiah Jeremiah Williacey, in the North Creek area of Belize City and found a .45 pistol on him which contained five live .45 rounds. Later that day police pursued a man on McKenzie Lane and stopped at a yard waiting for reinforcements when 32-year-old Clifford Russell Anderson, emerged from the yard with a .38 revolver.

Speaking on the issue today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said, “These are persons who we believe were going to carry out murders, but they were interrupted or their acts were foiled by the police’s actions and presence on the streets,” Williams said.

The crackdown comes after a surge of gang violence last week, which saw five men murdered in three days.
