By Aaron Humes: At midnight tonight, fuel prices will go up once again – and the only person with the authority to stop or mitigate it, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance John Briceño, is choosing not to, according to the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).

In a statement the party called for the lowering of Government-imposed taxes on gasoline by two dollars, reminding the ruling People’s United Party (PUP) of its promise before elections to keep prices below ten dollars a gallon across the board.

The Opposition says that the burden of the high prices is too much for Belizeans – both ordinary consumers at the pumps and businesses who must pay more to acquire and transport goods and pass on those prices to customers.

The UDP cited its management of the issue, including absorbing increases, capping tax take, and changing the formula to ease prices. Compare that to the over 50 price increases since the PUP took office, including three this month alone.

It all adds up to breaking point, according to the UDP if something is not done, and quickly.
