Robber who pulled a gun on off-duty policeman remanded to prison

By BBN Staff: A Belize City resident, accused of pulling a gun on an off-duty police officer while trying to escape from committing a robbery, was remanded to the Belize Central Prison today.

Twenty-one-year-old Kenyon Flores appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court answering to a single charge of aggravated assault upon PC Luis Santoya.

In court, Flores pleaded not guilty and due to the nature of the offense, he was denied bail and remanded to jail until May 3, 2022.

Reports are that, on the morning of January 18, PC Santoya was walking in the Constitution Park from the direction of Johnson Street, heading towards Woods Street, when his attention was drawn to a female shouting for help on Woods Street.

He noticed two men running from the scene and a Bangladeshi shop keeper on Wood Street shouting. PC Santoya knew one of the perpetrators, and though he was off-duty and not in uniform, he obstructed the path of the fleeing robber. The man then threw a stolen purse to his accomplice, who dropped the purse during the exchange.

Santoya said he went to pick up the purse, when one of the robbers pulled a chrome pistol from his pants waist, pointed it into his chest and told him to move. The men then made their escape.

Thus far, Flores has not been charged for the robbery and his accomplice is at large though police know his identity.
