Man walks free from domestic abuse case as wife requests no further court action then seeks guidance from court about getting divorced

By BBN Staff: A Belize City man accused of beating his wife left the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today clear of any criminal charges, but with the assurance that his marriage was coming to an end.

Fifty-three-year-old Herbert Martells appeared unrepresented in court to face criminal charges of harm, for allegedly punching his wife several times to the face after she asked him for money for their daughter.

He was already granted bail in the sum of $500 when the wife came to court and said she did not want to pursue the matter any further. With that, the Magistrate stuck out the matter for want of prosecution, and Martells was free to leave.

While in court, the wife explained that she does not want to pursue the criminal matter due to their daughter, but that she wants Martells to leave her alone and inquired from the Magistrate how she could apply for a divorce.
