By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean archaeologist Dr. Jaime Awe is to receive the 2022 Award of Excellence from the Society for American Archaeology.
“Jaime Awe, an associate professor in NAU Anthropology, is the recipient of the Society for American Archaeology 2022 Award for Excellence in Latin American and Caribbean,” said the Northern University of Arizona (NAU) in a social media post on February 15.
NAU said Dr. Awe will be honored at the organization’s award ceremony on April 1, 2022.
The Society for American Archaeology (SSA) is having its 87th Annual Meeting from March 30-April 3 in Chicago Illinois.
“SSA’s Annual brings together the archaeological community to share ideas, best practices, and state of the art knowledge; meet and network in interest groups, panels, symposia, and committees; and to celebrate their field,” says the SSA on its website.
Dr. Awe who is from San Ignacio and is Belize’s leading archaeologist has been working in the restoration of Belize’s Mayan temples for many years and has collaborated with leading archaeologists and anthropologists.
He majored in anthropology at Trent University in Canada and did his doctoral studies at the State University of New York at Albany and the University of London. He has taught at Trent University, the University of New Hampshire, Galen University, and is now at NAU.
Awe has been Belize’s Chief Archaeologist and Acting Commissioner of Archaeology at the Department of Archaeology and Director of the Institute of Archaeology (NICH).
