By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Road Maintenance Unit in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Development, and Housing (MIDH) complained about the amount of garbage they collected at Mile 8 on the George Price Highway.

In a social media post, the MIDH’s Road Maintenance Unit posted photographs of the garbage disposed of in public spaces that they collected.

“The truth is when this happens it discourages us and makes our work much more difficult,” said the MIDH in a social media post.

“We send out an appeal to our people again – please work with us to keep your communities clean. This isn’t only unsightly but unhealthy.”

At the Mile 8 communities, known collectively as Western Paradise village, there is no government garbage collection system. There are two private collectors but like in other communities countrywide, particularly in the rural areas, the garbage disposal is a problem.

While it might be ‘unsightly but unhealthy’, the reality is that in rural areas the garbage collection system leaves much to be desired and the residents are not happy about it. In fact, residents are not happy about the lack of many ‘essentials’ like garbage collection, roadside grass cutting, roads conditions and maintenance, drainage, etc.

In many rural areas, there is no garbage collection system in place and people end up burning the garbage causing a health hazard due to the constant smoke. When garbage is not burned, it becomes a stinking health hazard.

In some cases, there are private collectors, but their service is not the optimum though they try their best in most cases.

Of course, there is also the case of those who just throw garbage anywhere, anytime, because they are not willing to pay or simply can’t pay for garbage disposal. Finally, there are certainly those who take no pride in their surroundings and dispose of garbage in a disgraceful manner and it must be noted.

In the end, it’s a problem that must be closely reviewed by the authorities in communion with the communities concerned.
