Toledo villager calls for road to be fixed for children to travel from Dolores to Corazon Creek Technical High School in Corazon

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A Toledo villager is calling for the road between Dolores and Corazon Creek to be fixed for children to travel properly from Dolores to Corazon Creek Technical High School.

“Would like … plead to the government to do something about the road condition that our children are traveling to get to Corazon High School and back to Dolores Village,” said Caal Ese in a Facebook post.

“There is no school bus because of the road condition, the students are being taken in a pickup truck, packed up like sardines, some students go on motorcycle, this is really injustice to our children.”

From what we understand there are five access roads to Corazon Creek from villages like Dolores, Crique Sarco, San Benito Poite, Otoxha, and Sunday Wood. School children must take the bus when there is one very early in the morning, between 4:30 am from San Benito Poite which is the farthest, to get to school. Teachers who live in Punta Gorda have to travel two hours to get to Corazon Creek, so it’s four hours a day on the road.

The roads are made of red clay so when it rains, they become slippery, and traveling on them becomes difficult.

Students and teachers also have to contend with flash floods during the rainy season which complicates matters.

Breaking Belize News was told that sometimes when the buses cannot advance anymore or they break down, the children have to walk to school which could be a matter of miles and they invariably get to school late, sometimes as late as 10:00 or 11:00 am.

But coming back to the roads, quite a bit of infrastructure work is needed as just throwing a coating over the red clay is only a temporary solution that will be needed again after the next rain.
