Bar Association condemns brutal killing of Estevan Baeza by Belize Defence Force soldier

Posted: Wednesday, April 6, 2022. 9:29 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: As public outrage continues over the brutal killing of 38-year-old Orange Walk resident Estevan Baeza by Belize Defence Force soldier Raheem Williams, the Belize Bar Association has come forward to express its condemnation of Williams’s use of force.

The Association issued a statement today noting that the force used against a civilian by a member of the security forces was excessive. The Association also noted that it regretted that Williams’s actions resulted in the loss of life.

“The privileges bestowed on members of Belize’s security forces come with an associated duty to uphold the rule of law. The fundamental duties of the security forces are to protect the life, safety, and well-being of residents. The Bar Association of Belize calls on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into all allegations of any such abuse,” the Association said.

The Bar Association also extended its condolences to Baeza’s family.

On the night of April 1, Williams and Baeza got into an altercation and Willimas savagely beat Baeza, causing injuries that he would later die from. Yesterday, the Belize Police Department officially charged Williams with a single count of murder.
