By Benjamin Flowers: On April 1, the Government of Belize relaxed COVID-19 regulations to near pre-pandemic conditions, with a few exceptions; however, Chief Executive Officer of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) Chandra Nisbet Cansino, says that the pandemic is still very much present at the hospital.
“For the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, the pandemic is still very real. Remember, anybody that needs hospitalization, for the most part, ends up here at the hospital,” Nisbet Cansino said.
She noted that the COVID-19 Unit currently has four patients, neither of whom have any severe symptoms, and there have been no deaths relating to the virus in the past few weeks, but despite that progress, the hospital maintains its vigilance.
She also noted that, based on the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), there has been no notable spike in new cases following the Easter holidays, which is grounds for some optimism.
“While we are looking at it positively, we are cautiously optimistic and we remain with all the COVID-19 protocols within the hospital setting,” she added.
The latest report published by the MOHW showed 10 new cases and 22 new recoveries.
