Ministry of Health says COVID hasn’t gone away; watch out

Posted: Tuesday, May 10, 2022. 6:11 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness says there has been a ‘steady increase’ in recent days of COVID-19 cases countrywide, particularly in the Belize and Cayo Districts.

65 new cases were reported over the weekend and a further 54 cases today, including 24 alone in Belize City, which the Ministry reports is “higher than normal activity.”

In a statement this evening, the Ministry said it “reminds the public of the importance of the public health measures and vaccinations in reducing the spread and severity of COVID-19.”

While there is no talk of returning to mandatory enforced public health measures, the Ministry is “encouraging” citizens to make use of masks in indoor and crowded spaces, regularly wash and sanitize hands, keep social distance and avoid crowded spaces whenever possible; attend medical care if you display any COVID-19 symptoms, and keep chronic diseases well controlled by taking all prescribed medication.

Eligible persons are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated and get a booster against COVID-19. The Ministry of Health & Wellness concludes that it “reminds all persons to remain vigilant and continue to safeguard themselves against COVID19. The health of our country and the sustainability of our economy depends on our actions.”
