By Benjamin Flowers: The mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, this weekend was played out in real-time on the live streaming service Twitch.
The suspected shooter is an 18-year-old racially motivated white male, who drove up to the grocery store, brandished an automatic weapon and opened fire on shoppers. The store was targeted for being store frequented by mostly black shoppers. Ten people were killed in the incident.
The shooter surrendered to police after the incident and was later identified as Payton Gendron, a resident of Conklin, New York, an area 200 miles southeast of Buffalo.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Twitch issued a statement following the incident, saying that the service had stopped his streaming, and deleted the video within two minutes.
“We are devastated to hear about the shooting that took place this afternoon in Buffalo, New York. Our hearts go out to the community impacted by this tragedy. Twitch has a zero-tolerance policy against violence of any kind and works swiftly to respond to all incidents. The user has been indefinitely suspended from our service, and we are taking all appropriate action, including monitoring for any accounts rebroadcasting this content,” the statement said.
Business of Apps reports that Twitch has an approximate viewership of around 17 million people per day, and like many services of its kind, also has Belizean viewers as well as broadcasters.
