By Aaron Humes: Hours after the announcement of the International Food and Music Festival, the Opposition United Democratic Party has demanded that the Belize Tourism Board disclose how public funds will be spent for the event and that Belizean artists should get more than the reported 5 percent they have been allocated.
The UDP claims that about $1 million will be spent and ties the issue to the controversial introduction of the new Trade Licensing bill which sets maximum fees to be charged for entertainers, local and foreign, to play at venues in the towns and cities.
Though the UDP expresses skepticism that this initiative will further energize the domestic and international tourism markets, it nonetheless demands a showcase of Belizean talent – and free entrance for Belizeans to the planned concert too.
