We started to ignore that evil exists in the world

By Charles Leslie Jr:

Criminals are now a plague all over our country.

But, what happened?

There are many opinions and many factors.

Below, are just my opinions and pointing out some of the factors.

We transferred responsibility for our actions from the individual to society.

We transferred the responsibility and accountability from the parents to the state.

Our laws shifted from protecting victims to protecting criminals.

The media (MSM and social) has turned criminals into celebrities.

Family values and the church (worshipping God) got replaced with worshipping decadence and degeneracy.

Socializing with family at home and at church got replaced with ‘socializing’ for the consumption of alcohol and other (legal and illegal) drugs.

Criminals are now called troubled youths.

Criminals can command an audience with top celebrities.

Criminals can command an audience with politicians in the high offices.

Even a Prime Minister of Belize.

These criminals continue to show society that they aren’t troubled.

Actually, they show that they are in fact enjoying themselves, as they create trouble and dangers for others.

I was born in 1980.

We grew up understanding that real evil exists in this world and that some people simply choose to do things that they know to be wrong when they do them.

Every kind of excuse, from poverty to an unhappy childhood, is now used to explain and excuse evil.

All the people who have come out of poverty or unhappy childhoods, or both, and become decent and productive human beings, are ignored.

We as Belizeans have lost touch with the concept of evil.

What did we do? We decided to change external conditions. If you are a criminal, it’s someone else’s fault. It’s society’s fault.

We forgot that the perverseness of human beings is real.

Up until the late 80s, we knew that the problem is internal.

It was factors such as our family, our culture, and our traditions that made a more positive difference than more and more government “solutions” for which we now constantly demand.

We decided to seek “the root causes of crime” and put less and less emphasis on the effectiveness of actually punishing and locking up criminals.

The hard facts show that the murder rate was not even close to what it is today, especially under the old traditional practices.

New approaches and policies went into effect in the 90s leading up to today — after which crime and violence have skyrocketed to the unprecedented levels it is at today.

Our children are now exposed, unfiltered, to the entire world and all its filth, decadence, and degenerate behavior, which can be collectively summed up as EVIL.

What can be done?

No one has a simple answer. However, this is my opinion:

The past three decades have involved replacing what worked with what sounded good.
