Ukraine’s President warns of famine and hunger “catastrophe”; Accuses Russia of blocking grain exports

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky warned of a hunger catastrophe accusing Russia of blocking grain exports from Ukraine.

During an address at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Zelensky said that Russian forces were blocking Ukraine from exporting 22 million tons of grain, barley, sunflower, and other food products.

Zelensky further said that if the country does not export in the near future, there will be famine.

“ There will be a catastrophe, there will be a deficit, there will be a high price,” Zelensky noted.

Some of Ukraine’s ports were blockaded by Russian forces.

Zelensky called on the international community saying that the ports can be unblocked in different ways, one of those ways by a military solution.

“That is why we turn to our partners with inquiries regarding the relevant weapons,” Zelensky stated.

Russia’s war on Ukraine continues to cause a ripple effect across the world and has contributed to the continued rise in fuel prices as well as the scarcity of grains and fertilizer.

In April, the Food and Agriculture Organization said that Russia’s war on Ukraine was responsible for the rise in the price of wheat, barley, corn, and other grains.

United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken said at the United Nations Security Council meeting on May 19 that Russia was weaponizing food during a moment of unprecedented global hunger, fueled by climate change, COVID-19, and made even worse by conflict.

“As a result of the Russian government’s actions, some 20 million tons of grain sit unused in Ukrainian silos as global food supplies dwindle, prices skyrocket, causing more around the world to experience food insecurity,” Blinken said.
