World Health Organization: Monkeypox outbreak not likely to lead to a pandemic

Posted: Monday, May 30, 2022. 8:48 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The World Health Organization (WHO) says that it does not believe that the monkeypox outbreak outside of Africa will lead to a pandemic, Reuters report.

At this time, it is unknown if infected people who are not displaying symptoms can transmit the disease.

About 20 countries have reported outbreaks of the viral disease, with over 300 confirmed infections mostly in Europe.

WHO is considering if the outbreak will be assessed as a “potential public health emergency of international concern”. This would accelerate research and funding to contain the disease.

WHO officials said, “At the moment, we are not concerned about a global pandemic,” when asked about the virus.

After contracting the monkeypox virus, the duration of the rash emerging and scabs falling off is recognized as the infectious period.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that monkeypox is a rare disease that is caused by the monkeypox virus. The disease was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name ‘monkeypox.’

Scientists are currently looking into the unusual surge of cases.

The CDC says that it is closely monitoring cases of monkeypox reported in several countries.
