By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, Hurricane Agatha made landfall in Southern Mexico as a Category 2 Hurricane.
Agatha is on record as the strongest hurricane to make landfall in May in the Eastern Pacific bringing torrential rains and winds of up to 105 miles per hour. Tourists and residents found shelters as the rains and winds lashed beaches.
The system then weakened after moving inland over Mexico.
Meteorologist Jeff Masters of the Yale Climate Connections confirmed to NBC that Agatha is the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in May in the eastern pacific. Masters said that the May water temperatures are usually cooler than they are at the peak of the hurricane season thus not many tropical disturbances develop into systems in May.
The system has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm but the National Hurricane Center says that heavy rains pose the threat of flash floods.
Forecasters are now closely monitoring for any development near the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean caused by the remnants of Agatha.
