Former Minister of Works Rene Montero to hand himself in to Police in July, says ComPol Chester Williams

Posted: Tuesday, June 7, 2022. 7:50 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Former Minister of Works and three (3) time Area Representative under the Dean Barrow administration, Rene Montero, is expected to hand in himself to local Police in July, according to the Commissioner of Police (ComPol) Chester Williams.

During Monday’s police press briefing, ComPol Williams was asked about the status of the former Minister of Works who is still at large.

Williams responded “We are counting on the undertaking given by the Attorney for Mr. Montero , and we’re hoping that, in fact, when he returns to the country, I was given a timeline. We have not reached that timeline as yet, but I’m almost confident that once we reach that timeline that the attorneys are going to bring him in.” And according to Williams, that timeline is July this year.

The former Minister of Works is being sought by Police since September of 2021 following internal investigations that were conducted by the Ministry of Works, now called Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH). Since the warrant for his arrest was issued last year, Montero did not hand himself in to Police and could not be located in Belize. An Interpol Red Notice was therefore served for him just over a month ago, designating Montero as an international fugitive subject to be located and arrested by law enforcement across the world.

Following the Interpol Notice, Montero’s lawyer, who happens to be his son, issued a statement stating that Montero was not in the country due to medical reasons but would hand himself in to Police once he returned to Belize.
