Belize Ambassador to Taiwan Dr. Candice Pitts presents copy of her doctoral dissertation to Taiwan’s National Central Library

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Ambassador to Taiwan Dr. Candice Pitts presented a copy of her doctoral dissertation to Taiwan’s National Central Library.

The Belize Embassy in Taiwan said the Director General of Taiwan’s National Central Library had requested of Ambassador Dr. Pitts that she provide Taiwan’s National Central Library with a copy of her doctoral dissertation, which she conducted and completed at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in the United States of America.

The presentation was made on Friday, June 17, at the National Central Library in Taipei.

Dr. Pitts dissertation is entitled: From Nationalism to Landscapism: Spaces-Between, Marronage, and the Literary I-mage-Nation of Zee Edgell (Belize), Jamaica Kinkaid (Antigua and Barbuda), and Margaret Cezair-Thompson (Jamaica).

Ambassador Dr. Pitts explained the central premises of the dissertation saying this event is a part of the larger objective to promote Belizean literatures in Taiwan.

“Ambassador concluded her remarks by suggesting to the Graduate Students in attendance to consider placing Taiwan’s literatures in conversation with Belize’s literatures to discern what those interesting conversations can yield towards intellectual traditions in both countries,” said the Belize Embassy.

Ambassador Pitts was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation “for her generous dissertation donation” by Shu-Hsien Tseng, Director General of the National Central Library.

Ambassadors and representatives from St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Haiti, St. Lucia, and the Kingdom of Eswatini attended the presentation along with representatives from Taiwan’s Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education and National Central Library, as well as several Graduate students.
