U.S. Government launches operation to disrupt human smuggling

Posted: Sunday, June 19, 2022. 8:57 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States Government has launched an operation to disrupt the human smuggling networks amidst another migrant caravan heading for the U.S.

Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas told CNN that the operation is “unprecedented”.

The U.S. will reportedly deploy personnel throughout Latin America in an effort to cease human smuggling.

The announcement was made while almost 5,000 migrants continue their journey north from Southern Mexico.

“We have brought an all-of-government effort to attack the smuggling organizations. It’s not just Homeland Security Investigations, it’s not just US Customs and Border Protection. But we’re working very carefully with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a number of agencies within the Department of Justice, and, of course, our partners in Mexico,” Mayorkas said.

Mayorkas reiterated that the Biden administration is “tackling the smuggling organizations that exploit these people.”

The U.S. has already deployed 1,300 personnel to the “Sting Operation” and invested over $50 million.

Almost 2,000 smugglers have been arrested, the Department of Homeland Security said.

The Department’s efforts to crack down on criminal smuggling organizations included a law enforcement unit to monitor the movement of migrants and the investigation and prosecution of human smuggling and trafficking networks.

At the Summit of the Americas, President Joe Biden said that human traffickers would not be tolerated.

“If you prey on desperate and vulnerable migrants for profit, we are coming for you,” Biden said.

A White House fact sheet announced that $314 million in funding would be used for “stabilization efforts in the Americas.”

Officials said that the funding is in an effort to assist countries to provide opportunities to migrants in hopes of stemming irregular migration.
