By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Pirates shocked National Amateur Women’s League (MAWL) champions Jewel Fury 2-1 in the first leg of the NAWL A semifinals at Ambergris Stadium in La Isla Bonita.

After a gruelling 40 minutes, Elva Núñez hit the opener for San Pedro off a cross from the right side.

Jewel Fury responded to the occasion, levelling the match in the 49 off a lob by NAWL A’s top scorer Khalydia Velasquez.

But the Pirates were not to be denied today. In the 89’, Tamara Baptist sank in the winner.

2-1. The San Pedro Pirates prevailed.

“Big win last night by our female San Pedro Pirates FC,” said the San Pedro Pirates on Sunday thanking their fans for the support.

Jewel Fury acknowledged the setback but promised they’ll live another day.

“The result of the first leg of the semifinals was not in our favor. We lost 2-1. However, this isn’t over yet … we’ll fight until the last whistle blows for our home game,” said Jewel Fury.

Both teams have developed a fierce rivalry. Their first encounter this season ended in a 0-0 draw in Belmopan at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium on Saturday, March 26. In the return on Saturday, May 21, Jewel Fury blasted the San Pedro-side 3-0 at their own home.

Now, San Pedro Pirates have the edge going to Belmopan on Saturday for the second leg and a ticket to the NAWL A Final.
